Grinding aluminum is best done with Coated abrasives. If you want to surface grind Aluminum with a wheel, I recommend you use a Silicon Carbide wheel such as 37C60-JVK. If you want to utilize a segment on a blanchard grinder you have 2 choices: A vitrified bond such as 37C46-IV or a resin bond such as 32AC60-JB18 You should be able to achieve a 50 Ra or better.
Grinding aluminum will only clog up your stone grinding wheel. It is the next person inline who is going to grind either steel or iron. Aluminum mixed with iron or steel particles is actually very dangerous. The grinding abrasives commonly used in materials preparation are silicon carbide (SiC), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), emery (Al2O3 Fe3O4), composite ceramics and diamond. Emery paper is rarely used today in materials preparation due to its low cutting efficiency. SiC is more readily available as waterproof paper than aluminum oxide.
